The Denominations of Origin in Costa Rica are regulated by the Law of Trademarks and other distinctive signs, No. 7879 of December 22nd 1999. The registration of a Denomination of Origin has an indefinite duration.
Trademarks in Costa Rica
In Costa Rica, rights on industrial and intellectual property are guaranteed under the Political Constitution; Article 47 states that, “Any author, inventor, producer or trader will temporarily enjoy exclusive ownership on their work, invention, commercial trademark or name in arrangement with the Law”. Commercial Trademarks and Names are regulated in this country by the Central American Agreement for the Protection of Industrial Property, and by the recent Law of Trademarks and other Distinctive Signs, No. 7978 of January 6th 2000.
